What is it about:

We have tested the basic characteristics of this application within a comparative analysis of 3 applications of similar purpose.

Aipoly Vision is an application that recognizes objects and colors and helps blind people or people with vision reduced to recognize the environment. The application works pointing the phone camera to the object of interest and pressing any of the buttons of recognition at the bottom of the screen to activate the artificial intelligence tool, presenting out loud the recognized objects.

Aipoly Vision can recognize 1,000 basic objects free and thousands more through a subscription.

For this review only has been analyzed the free version which includes the following modes of operation:

  • General Recognition: recognize a wide variety of objects. Object recognition does not require an Internet connection.
  • Color recognition: Aipoly can differ more than 900 colors. The list also can be simplified a few through the configuration.

Check Aipoly vision website in the following link

Aipoly works on Android 5.1 or higher versions.

Forms of acquisition:

The Android app can be found  in Android Google Play:

You can download the application for Apple terminals in the following link:

The manufacturer offers in turn for companies, adapted versions of the application to another type of electronic devices:

Warranty and support

Las opciones de garantía y soporte no están bien definidas en la web del desarrollador, ni otras webs adicionales,  no  existe un mail de contacto destinado a soporte en la web pero en la tienda de aplicaciones Google Play encontramos el mail de contacto

The version tested in this review is the free version.

Aipoly Vision has the option to subscribe to a monthly fee to unlock a wide variety of plants, animals and food identification, and improve the general recognition of the objects by increasing the number of identifiable elements. The subscription also allows reading text, and identification of currency. This version is known as the premium version. There is a trial version of 1 week of Aipoly Vision subscription premium.   After this period a fee of  4.99€/month will be charged.

Technical verification:

In this technical verification we will analyze the use and configuration of Aipoly vision in Android. In any case, social validation has been done with the IOS operating system application behaving in a very similar way.

The version of the application tested  is the v1.0.2, the application has a size medium 35 MB which is increasing as it makes use of the application, because it has a large database of image that allows the use of its functionality of general identification still not having internet access , what we consider a success.

The application is easy to find and install, but the site on Google Play has the same problems that appear during the use, there are only small translated parts instead of a full traslation of  all descriptions.

In our opinion, need some effort to correct translation to spanish of the features, tutorial and Google Play site of the application.

The application has 3 free features and other 6 payment functionalities. we test the free features for comparison with the other 2 chosen applications.

Among 3 free functionalities, we will use the functionality of general identification and the identification of color which are available in 3 applications. Regarding the functionality "navigation" labeled with an arrow, is worth mentioning that it is a way of identifying basic objects that can be found on a walking tour through the city.

The first screen that is activated after installation is a tutorial outlining the features of the application but as it has already been mentioned is not translated to Spanish while we have selected as primary language Spanish in the Setup menu.

Configuration options

The configuration options are accessed through the main menu to the "settings" window.

In this menu, shown in the above image we can find options such as enabling or disabling the voice that reads the object identification, detail that may be of interest to people who use Talkback or Voiceover since it allows to disable the automatic reading of results that is too insistent and perform only the reading of the result every time you cross  that button with the screen reader.

On the other hand, it allows the configuration of language, in this case only selected language affects the results delivered after every identification, since as we pointed out above, the rest of the menus remain in English.

The application allows the deactivation of auxiliary light  for the camera that is activated by default automatically when Identification functionality is active.

This is recommended in cases where outside lighting is adequate since the fact that the auxiliary light is on generates a great consumption of battery and heating of the terminal.

Another configuration options which we mention in the section of identification of colors is the selection of the number of colors that identifies allows to select between 30 to 900, in our case we consider proper simplification in 30 colors.

The configuration option "Keep awake" selected by default keeps the application in the foreground all the time, while deactivating it, the phone is locked after some time configured by default in Android or IOS.

Finally, the option "Show onboarding" serves to show the tutorial again.

General identification of objects

This functionality is tagged as 'general' for screen readers.

As explained at the beginning, this functionality and the analysis of color can be used without need for data connectivity which is an advantage over the other 2 tested applications that need connectivity for analysis.

We have identified numerous objects with the application whose detailed analysis you can find in the social validation of this review.

From the technical point of view, we can point to that bearing in mind that the application does not use the network to contrast the image with an online database, the number of images correctly identified is very satisfactory, although the system oscillates much when it comes to communicate the result and should indicate a unique result for each targeted object.

During the constant use of the application, we appreciate that the consumption is high, this is because the application makes use of the additional light from the phone to improve the illumination of the objects focused, in addition to the use of the camera and the internal processing of the information to identify the images.

To solve this problem and at the same time improve the user experience would recommend implementing a start / stop button  allowing to activate  both the camera and the light and processing only in the moment in which the user decides to identify an image.

Identification of colors

This functionality is labeled as 'color' for screen readers.

The quality of the identification of colors varies a lot with light but is pretty good in good lighting conditions.

It is recommended to reduce the number of colors offered as a result to optimize the identification, for this you need to enter in the "settings" menu and in the choice of color, select "single (30)".

The following images show some satisfactory color IDs.

Payment features

The introduction of a means of payment is required to access the features of payment that are not subject to this review, which is deterrent to users.

We would recommend allowing to enjoy these features without the need to introduce this method of payment.

  • The large number of images and colors identified correctly taking into account that makes no use of the internet.
  • The usefulness of the functionalities offered for free.
  • The identification speed.

Points of improvement

  • The amount of information provided on each identification without the possibility to reduce it or manage it.
  • Excessive consumption and heating of the terminal, however, is positive that some aspects such as the auxiliary light can be turned off.
  • It is recommended to translate menus and tutorial to the different languages in which the application is offered.
  • The need to provide billing information to start the trial period of 7 days from payment capabilities is deterrent to the user.

Social valuation:

As in the case of the other 2 compared applications we have made 2 different social validation tests. On the one hand, Andres (user with no vision) with terminal IPhone IOS and on the other hand Domo (user with reduced vision) with Samsung Android device.

IOS test performed by Andrés

Andrés, our volunteer specializing in products for zero vision tests, has tested 3 applications of this comparison and in the following lines we summarize hes use experience.

Andrés starts to manage his IPhone 5S terminal with great agility helped by the Voiceover screen reader, the installation of the application is simple to obtain it from the Apple Store.

Although this application includes features available after payment, we have analyzed only the free features of general character that fit perfectly in the comparison because of its similarity with the functionalities available in the other 2 applications. In this case the 2 features of free use are general objects identification and the identification of colors.

To perform a comparison under the same conditions have been analyzed a series of objects of common use with the 3 applications.

The general identification with an icon of planet earth and the tag "general"  has been tested with the following results.

  • Pen: it identifies it as pen from the beginning.
  • Cup: it identifies it as a cup of coffee, the problem is that it oscillates and begins to give other names like coffee etc.
  • Paper cup: identifies it as a disposable Cup, sometimes introduces some other option, it should not oscillate so much.
  • Chair: it identifies from the beginning as a Chair and does not change.
  • Your Smartphone: it identifies him as a mobile phone without flickering.
  • Water bottle: identified from the beginning without oscillations as a bottle of water.
  • Computer mouse: easily identified it as a computer mouse
  • Keys: it identifies it as keys from the begining.
  • Wallet: identifies it as a bag which is not correct.
  • Notebook:  takes a long time, says that it is not sure, and doesn't identify it.

Another features that offers the application Aipoly vision is the analysis of colors. To test such functionality Andrés has used different colors cardboards.

The results of the identification of colors are as follows:

  • Rose: it identifies him as dark pink.
  • Blue: identify it correctly as blue.
  • Green: it identifies it as bluish green.
  • Orange: identifies it as reddish, orange or tomato
  • Yellow: it varies with many names, avocado and dark gold.
  • Brown: it oscillates enough and fails to identify it.
  • Red: it identifies it as strawberry or tomato.
  • Purple: it identifies it as Amethyst.

General impressions:

  • In general the application isn't bad identifying objects and has improved a lot with respect to a previous version that we tested.
  • This application has a problem on the number of times that speaks for a single identification. It is recommended to only give a result for each identification, but take more time to do so. It is important to note that if the object or color does not vary it makes no sense that the app continue repeating the name.
  • While information from identified objects is very properly translated into Spanish, all additional configuration information and tutorials should also be in Spanish as Andrés have difficulties with English.

Android test performed by Domo

Juan Carlos Domonte (Domo) is our volunteer specializing in product testing for people with reduced vision.

Domo´s area of vision is very small so he can only appreciate something in the middle and upper side.

Domo uses an Android device, getting closer to be able to view the screen. It uses the screen zoom function, and with a Samsung S8 is handled very well.

Regarding the tutorial screens Domo has the impression that is not of interest for not being translated into the Spanish. For this reason begins to use the application with no indication, in this case, access to the main menu is very simple because it is the way that starts by default, but to access the other menus is less intuitive.

The first impression of Dome is that the application provides too many responses of voice.

We analyze the same objects in Android already Andres analyzed with the same application installed on IPhone to check their similarity.

  • Pen: the pen is correctly identified.
  • Cup: the cup of coffee is identified correctly.
  • Glass paper: the disposable Cup is well identified.
  • Chair: identified from the begining.
  • Smartphone: correctly identified from the beginning.
  • Water bottle: identified correctly.
  • Computer mouse: first identifies how headphones, stethoscope and finally arrives to tell computer mouse, varies much.
  • Keys: correctly identified from the beginning.
  • Portfolio: identifies it as a charger, battery, do not get to finally succeed in identifying.
  • Notebook: it identifies it as table lamp, not sure and don't get to finally identify it.

The results of the identification of colors are as follows:

  • Pink: pink chewing gum.
  • Blue: blue sky and other types vary a lot.
  • Green: light and blue-green Turquoise.
  • Orange: dark peach.
  • Brown: it identifies him as grey.
  • Red: Pale red.
  • Purple: light violet Lavender light.
  • Yellow: Green Khaki color hazelnut.

General impressions:

  •  The application is useful in identifying colors and when identifying objects.
  •  The application should have some stop method, perhaps a "Start" key and a "Stop" key to control the number of voice results it offers.
  •  With colors mix too many answers.
  •  The phone is very hot because the flashlight, camera, etc. are turned on.

The following table shows a comparative of the social validation criteria for the 3 tested applications.
