Video Review Navilens personal labels

Below is the video of the review.

What does it consist of:

From Navilens we get the new labels for personal use that deserve an independent review. It is a large pack of free, user-printable labels that allow the labeling of everyday products to facilitate their identification by people with reduced or no vision. The labels are read with the same Navilens application that is used for identification and guidance in spaces and their information can be easily edited and updated from it.

Forms of acquisition:

The manufacturer's website where you can find more information is: Navilens website

You can download the free version of the Android application by clicking on the following icon:

You can download the free version of the application for IOS by clicking on the following icon:

The use of the application to read labels for personal use is free of charge for end users. Once the application is downloaded, you can request your labels for personal use through it.

In case of being a company or entity, you can contact the company to find out a budget to label your space in the following email: info@navilens.com

Technical assessment:

If you want to know more technical details about the use of the application, you can consult the analysis that we already published on the global use of the application at the following link:

https://www.orientatech.es/es/sistema-etiquetas-navilens

In this case we are going to focus solely on the new personal tag functionality. Personal labels are a set of downloadable and printable labels by the users themselves that can be requested from the application itself.

To request the shipment of labels for personal use, you must access the button located in the lower right corner of the screen with the symbol of a rocket and known as the “quick start menu”.

At this point you access a form in which you must indicate a name and an email account in which you will immediately receive a pack of printable labels in pdf format. The label pack consists of several sheets: 1 full page label, 1 page of 4 labels, 2 pages of 16 labels, 1 page of 35 labels and a last one of 64 labels.

Once we receive these labels we can print them in color and cut out the ones we consider necessary. The labels can be glued on the objects that we want to identify. Another very successful option that we have tried is to superimpose them with tape or plastic lining to the desired objects.

Once the objects with the different labels have been identified, we proceed to put identifying names to each of them. For this step, you must focus with the phone's camera until the new label is identified and then double-tap on the screen to open its editing menu. This option is enabled in the penultimate icon at the bottom that is identified with a pen and with the identifier “personal annotation”.

In this section an identification for said label is entered, for example 'coffee' which will be the one that will be read from now on each time said label is identified with the camera.

As this new update is directly focused on the end user, we are going to include all the comments regarding its use in the social assessment section that we have made together with our volunteer Andrés.

Social valuation:

To carry out this test we have had the help of our volunteer Andrés, who specializes in evaluating all kinds of products for blind people.

As we already had the NaviLens application installed on our IPhone terminal, it was only necessary to check that we had the latest version 1.1.2 of it, since this is the one that incorporates the functionality of personal labels.

Once this check is done, we activate the IOS screen reader or voiceover and We proceed to carry out the steps that we discussed in the technical review to request and print our own labels.

Use of the application

Once we have our pack of printed labels, we select those that best adapt to the size of our objects to be identified, including a box of infusions, a mug, a pack of coffee, a sugar and a marker.

The number and size of the different labels is more than enough to be able to label hundreds of everyday objects. The manufacturer indicates certain steps so that a blind person can fold their own labels. In this case, it may be advisable to request help so that the labels of each object are well accessible to be read by the camera.

When using the application for reading labels, in our opinion it is better to deactivate the voice instructions in the settings menu and use only voiceover (or Talkback in the case of Android) to avoid information overload and improve navigation through the different menus. In any case, it is good to activate the orientation and distance information fields in order to better focus and position the camera when locating the different objects. Regarding the labels, it should be noted that even the smallest ones are detected at a great distance, even detecting some located on curved or plasticized surfaces.

The process of updating information for each label has been very simple and intuitive for us, even with the screen reader, in less than 1 minute it is possible to identify a new object and save it in the application with its corresponding name.

There is a feature that we liked a lot during the label reads and it is the fact that when reading multiple labels simultaneously, the application warns of the order of the labels within the set: label 1 of 3, label 2 of 3 ...

Definitely this update to NaviLens including free labels for personal use shapes a solution that has a real impact on people's lives. This impact is the most valuable feature of all those we analyze at Orientatech, which is why we have rated this review with the highest grade.
