What is it about:

From Navilens we get the new labels for personal use that deserve an independent review. It is a large pack of free printable labels by the user that allow the labeling of everyday products to facilitate identification to people with reduced or no vision. The labels are read with the same Navilens application used for identification and guidance in spaces and their information can be edited and updated easily from it.

Forms of acquisition:

The manufacturer's website where you can find more information is:

You can download the free version of the android application by clicking on the following icon:

You can download the free version of the IOS application by clicking on the following icon:

The use of the application to read labels for personal use has no cost to the end users. Once downloaded, the application can request its personal use tags through it.

In case of being a company or entity you can contact the company to find out a quote to label your space in the following email:

Technical verification:

If you want to know more technical details about the use of the application you can consult the analysis that we already published about the global use of the application in the following link:

In this case we are going to focus only on the new functionality of personal tags. Personal labels are a set of downloadable and printable labels by the users themselves that can be requested from the application itself.

To request the sending of personal use labels, access the button located in the lower right corner of the screen with the symbol of a rocket and known as "quick start menu".

At this point you access a form in which you must indicate a name and an email account in which you will immediately receive a pack of printable labels in pdf format. The pack of labels is composed of several sheets: 1 full-page label, 1 page of 4 labels, 2 pages of 16 labels, 1 page of 35 labels and a last of 64 labels.

Once we receive these labels we can print them in color and cut the ones we consider necessary. The labels can be glued on the objects we wish to identify. Another one very successful option that we have tried is to superpose them with zeal or plastic lining to the desired objects.

Once the objects with the different labels have been identified, we proceed to put identifying names to each one of them. For this step you should focus with the phone's camera until the new label is identified and then touch twice on the screen to open its edit menu. This option is enabled in the penultimate icon on the bottom that is identified with a pen and with the identifier "personal annotation".

In this section an identification is introduced for said label, for example 'coffee' which will be the one hereinafter read each time that label is identified with the camera.

As this new update is directly focused on the end user we will include all the comments regarding its use in the section of social assessment that we have done together with our volunteer Andrés.

  • Accessibility: 5 sobre 5(5/5)

Social valuation:

To carry out this test, we counted on the help of our volunteer Andrés, a specialist in valuing all kinds of products for blind people.

As we already had the NaviLens application installed in our IPhone terminal, it was only necessary to verify that we had the latest version 1.1.2 of it since this is the one that incorporates the functionality of personal tags.

Once this check is made, we activate the IOS or voiceover screen reader and proceed to perform the steps we discussed in the technical review to request and print our own labels.

Usoe of the application

Once we have our pack of printed labels, we select those that best adapt to the size of our objects to be identified, among which are a box of infusions, a cup, a pack of coffee, a sugar and a marker.

The number and size of the different labels is more than enough to be able to label hundreds of everyday objects. The manufacturer indicates certain steps so that a blind person can truncate their own labels. In this case it may be advisable to ask for help so that the labels of each object are easily accessible to be read by the camera.

At the time of using the application for reading labels, in our opinion it is better to deactivate the vocal instructions in the configuration menu and use only voiceover (or Talkback in the case of Android) to avoid an overload of information and improve navigation through the different menus. In any case, it is good to activate the information fields of orientation and distance to be able to focus and locate the camera better when locating the different objects. Regarding the labels, it should be noted that even those with the smallest size are detected at a great distance, detecting some located on curved or plasticized surfaces.

The process of updating information for each label has been very simple and intuitive even when working with the screen reader, in less than 1 minute it is possible to identify a new object and save it in the application with its corresponding name.

There is a feature that we liked a lot during the readings of labels and is the fact that in the readings of multiple labels simultaneously the application warns of the order of the same within the set: label 1 of 3, label 2 of 3 ...

Definitely this NaviLens update including free personal use tags gives shape to a solution that has a real impact on people's lives. This impact is the most valuable feature of all that we analyze in Orientatech, which is why we rated this review with the highest score.
