What is it about:

We have tested the basic features of this application within a comparative analysis of 3 applications of similar purpose.

TapTapSee is a mobile phone application designed specifically for blind people. The application uses the camera functions and screen reader of the device to photograph objects and identify them aloud to the user.
In TapTapSee, the user touches twice the screen of the device to photograph any object of two or three dimensions at any angle and have it analyzed and defined in a matter of seconds.
TapTapSee includes the following additional features: Repeat the last image ID, the ability to upload images from the camera file, share the ID via Twitter, Facebook or email, and the ability to save the identified image.
The analyzed version 3.1.0 works with versions of Android 4.0 and higher.

Warranty and support

As it is currently a free application, the developer does not offer a technical support service or warranty.

There is a contact address

You can access the web of the application in the following  link

This application has had several stages, at first the application was completely free and since 2013 suffered a period in which users were charged with a fee, the application is now free again, even the developer API is found on the web.
However, something happened to us that other users mentioned in their evaluations of Playstore, the application stops working during a certain period of time that we are not warned (several days), to reuse it is necessary to uninstall it and return it to install.

Technical verification:

The application is easily localizable in GooglePlay, it is necessary to write the name without spaces for its better identification "Taptapsee".

As soon as the application is accessed, a message appears on the screen indicating that the Talkback must be activated in order to make correct use of the application.

In our opinion this is not satisfactory, since many people with reduced vision could benefit from the identification of images or colors, but do not use the screen reader in their daily management of the Smartphone and do not want to activate it because not knowing their operation They do not manage to handle the terminal with screen reader. In case of activating the screen reader the mode of use is very simple, there are very few features, the most important being to take a photo to proceed with its identification.

The previous photo shows the main screen with the interface at the top that we summarize below:

  • Repeat: it is used to repeat the identification text of the last image, this is also achieved by accessing the bottom of the screen where the text identifying each image is displayed.
  • Library: it is used to select some image of the gallery of our phone, either of the taken with the camera previously or of the ones stored in the phone coming from any other application or social network.
  • Quota: this functionality is poorly translated for people who do not use screen readers, although, in the screen reader is correctly identified with the text "Share the recent image", and that is precisely, once activated allows us to share The image taken along with the text of your analysis in our social networks or email. This feature seems interesting for those users who want a second opinion after the analysis by some family or user of the internet.
  • In the upper right corner there is a button identified with the letter i of information and in screen reader is identified as "about taptapsee". In our opinion the screen label should be something more precise, we suggest titling "information and configuration", it is in this screen that shows the version information and configuration.
  • This screen allows you to configure the flash activation and deactivation, automatic storage of the analyzed photo in the phone's general gallery, it is possible to activate the full screen mode and deactivate the autofocus sound.

In general there are few options and you could include an activation and deactivation of Talkback from the application or the reading of text without Talkback enabled.
In general, after the tests carried out, we consider that the image identification is very good and complete, although sometimes the translation into Spanish generates some confusion in the results offered. In the section of social validation a more complete detail of the results of identification of numerous objects is offered.
Access to images from the library allows us to analyze images stored on the phone previously.

    • Image identification in general is good.
    • Having few functionalities, the use is very simple.

    Improvement points

      •  It should be possible to read the result with voice without having the screen reader activated.
      •  The translation of menus and identification results should be improved. (For results sometimes sentences without nonsense are used)

      Social valuation:

As in the case of the other 2 applications compared, we performed 2 different social validation tests. On the one hand, Andres (user with zero vision) with IPhone IOS terminal and on the other hand Domo (user with reduced vision) with terminal Samsung Android.

      IOS test performed by Andrés.

Andrés, our volunteer specialized in testing products for zero vision, has tested the 3 applications of this comparison and in the following lines we summarize his experience of use.
Andres installs the application on his IPhone 5S terminal with great ease helped by the Voiceover screen reader.
A message appears notifying you that Taptapsee wants to access the camera that needs to be accepted.
It is important to emphasize that this application does not work in real time but from photographs, which differs from the application Aipoly vision, in such a way that only gives a result for each object analyzed.
The aditional information is translated into Spanish which facilitates its configuration through the screen reader.
The option to share photos seems good, Andres tries to share a photo by WhatsApp but gives an error that causes the app to close, so it ends up sharing it by email.
It is very good with text, being able to identify written text in the different objects relative to product brands or other characteristics. In turn the application has a little more difficulty identifying colors.

The following images are part of the list of objects used to test the application.

      DSC_0123DSC_0130 DSC_0148

We wanted to test the same objects as with the other applications compared, these are the results:

      • Pen: It is identified as "Image 2 is click on the pen on white surface", the identification is good but the phrase used towards the user does not make much sense. In a second attempt "image 1 is blue and white click pen".
      • Mug: "Image 2 is black ceramic mug", in this case the mug is purple but the object is correctly identified.
      • Glass paper: "Image 3 is black and white disposable cup on white surface", in this case does not hit again in color but hit on the object.
      • Chair: "Image white plastic armchair with gray metal base" which is a good identification.
      • Smartphone: "Samsung smartphone black on desk" is a very good identification and the brand is included.
      • Computer mouse: "Black HP mouse" again a good identification, is very good identifying brands and texts.
      • Water bottle: "Plastic transparent water bottle" is correct.
      • Keys: "carabiner assorted keys on white background" is correct.
      • Wallet: "black leather wallet bifold on black table" correct identification.
      • Notebook: "Blue and black spiral on white wood surface", it is necessary to identify the type of object.

      General impressions:

      • In this application there is no functionality dedicated to color analysis, but this information is included in the overall analysis, this functionality is not always accurate.
      • Working with photo, although it works slower than Aipoly does not generate as much information repetitive, the colors are not always well identified  but the text and brands are identified better.
      • It is easy to handle and it is appreciated that the explanations are in Spanish.
      • The fact of sharing the photos via mail can facilitate the identification with a second opinion of a person with vision.

      Android test performed by Domo

Juan Carlos Domonte (Domo) is our volunteer specialized in testing products for people with reduced vision. The area of vision of Domo is very reduced so he can only see something in the central area from near and up.
Domo uses an Android terminal, approaching a lot to be able to visualize the screen. He uses the screen zoom function, and with a Samsung S8 it handles very well.
Domo has installed the app quickly, finding it on Google Play.
The first thing the application warn in a message is that the talback is switched off and asks if we want to activate it.
In this case Domo does not use its terminal with screen reader so it decides not to activate the talkback and here a problem appears since if he does not active the talkback he can not hear the audio description of the identified images. Domo suggests correcting this problem for people with reduced vision who still do not use the screen reader.

The application takes longer than Aipoly to process, but gives more information in each analysis.

      • Ballpoint pen: "blue and white click on the pen on the surface" well identified but the sentence is something abstract.
      • Mug: "black ceramic mug on wooden table" well-identified  object but not the color.
      • Paper cup: "Black and white coffee cup" well identified the object but not the color.
      • Chair: "White plastic armchair with gray metal frame" correct analysis.
      • Smartphone phone: "Black Samsung Android Smartphone" correct analysis.
      • Computer mouse: "Mouse with black HP cable" correct analysis.
      • Water bottle: "transparent plastic water container" well identified, although it is missing to point out that it is a bottle as in the IPhone analysis.
      • Keys: "Assorted keys on white surface" correct identification.
      • Wallet: "black wallet bi-fold" correct identification.
      • Notebook: "Blue notebook on white background" correct identification, in this case better than in the test with IPhone.

      General impressions:

      • The application provides very detailed information.
      • Voice description of the identification should be allowed without having the screen reader activated.
