The application of Android instant transcript It is a very important advance in the interpretation of conversations and sound stimuli for people with reduced or no hearing.

The application installed on a phone or tablet captures the sound of conversations in different environments through the microphone and converts it into text.

It is a very simple to use application that takes advantage of all the voice-to-text conversion capabilities developed by Google.

The app has been developed in collaboration with Gallaudet University, America's leading university for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Forms of acquisition:

The application is free to use and its Android version can be downloaded at the following link:

Technical assessment:

February 2020

Android Instant Transcription is an application that allows people with hearing difficulties or also people with speech difficulties to communicate with the people around them. For this, it has two forms of text input:

Speech - converts speech into written text.

Keypad - allows you to answer or speak without using your voice.

Features

Audio pickup      Keyboard text insertion

The application has two functions, voice transcription and some sounds to text and text input via keyboard.

Together, these two functions allow you to have a conversation by typing text or transforming your voice into written text.

Voice transcription is automatically activated when entering the application itself, that is, once it is accessed, the microphone begins to hear and transcribe. However, to access the keyboard, click on the icon that represents it in the bar at the bottom of the screen.

Configuration

Display and language settings    Event settings    Advanced settings

The application allows you to configure different aspects grouped into 5 sections:

- Screen. It allows changing the size of the text and the activation of the dark theme of the application.

– Audio and language. Allows you to select the microphone you want to use for voice recognition (the device's own or an external microphone if one is connected) and allows you to select two languages, one primary and one secondary, between which you can switch while speaking.

- Saved. Allows you to save the transcriptions made for 3 days and clear the history of those saved transcriptions.

– Events. It gives us the option to have our phone vibrate when there is a pause of more than 10 seconds between transcriptions along with an option to show labels for sounds around.

– Advanced settings. It allows us to select if we want to hide profanity and show us a pause button to control the transcription.

Tests performed

In order to analyze and be able to carry out an evaluation of the application, a series of tests have been carried out to verify the behavior of the application. These tests have been carried out in 2 different environments.

– Conversation in a quiet environment. During the tests carried out in this environment, the application has worked perfectly since there is no noise, the sound is captured very well, however, if the people who are participating in the conversation are very far from the mobile device, it is possible that there are words that it does not get to capture or writes them in an erroneous way.

– Conversation in a noisy environment. During the tests carried out in this environment, the application has responded remarkably, although its operation has depended a lot on the place where it is being used and, above all, on the amount of background noise, so it is necessary to speak near the microphone of the user. mobile or use an external one, which is the most recommended, even when we are not in a noisy place.

The external microphones that have been used for the development of these tests have been two: one integrated into headphones that are connected by cable and another integrated into headphones that are connected via Bluetooth, in the cases the audio and the level have been collected transcription improves considerably in noisy environments so its use is highly recommended.

It should also be noted that the transcriber tends to have some failures when converting the audio to text, mainly when a conversation is being held with several people and they all speak at the same time, so to facilitate a correct reading it is recommended that the participants talk about one in one.

On the other hand, the recognition of non-verbal sounds presents some drawbacks since there are times that it cannot fully identify the sounds that are generated, for example, clapping or snapping fingers, although there are others that identify quite well how the touches are at the door, music or laughter.

Conclusion

In general, the application works well, helping people with hearing functional diversity or who have speech difficulties to carry on a conversation.

The strong point of this application is undoubtedly that the transcription system is quite good and is even capable of identifying the intonation that a person gives to the sentences, that is, it is able to identify if a person is asking a question or if he is speaking in a neutral way, he is also able to use punctuation marks in a correct way.

The less positive aspects of the application are related to the recognition of non-verbal sounds, which could be improved and refined a little more since it is difficult to identify those sounds in some cases and in others a label is shown that does not represent the ones that really it's happening.

Finally, it should be noted that since it is a free application, it can be considered as a communication system for people who have hearing problems, although being available only for Android devices reduces the scope of people who can use it a bit.

Highlights

  • It enables people who are hearing impaired to have a reliable conversation in quiet surroundings.
  • Possibility to choose between 70 languages.
  • Allows quick access from the accessibility icon.
  • Simple and minimalist interface.
  • There is keyboard input as an alternative to the microphone.
  • Is free.

Improvement points

  • It would be interesting if the entered text could be converted to speech.
  • It would be interesting if an interface was developed in the form of a chat to better differentiate the interlocutors.
  • The possibility of developing a version for IOS could be studied.

Social valuation:

Pepe, our volunteer specialized in product testing for people with reduced or no hearing, has tested this product and offers us his opinion in the following lines.

To check, analyze and assess the usefulness of the application for deaf or hard of hearing people, it has carried out different tests or typical conversation scenarios during the day to day.

Conversation between two people in a silent environment

During the tests carried out in this way, he tells us that it works really well, since there is no background noise, the capture of sound and therefore words is much more efficient, achieving a very good instantaneous transcription. At home he uses it practically daily.

Even so, it is necessary to ensure that the interlocutors are not too far apart because the microphone of the mobile is limited, and the distance causes it a lot, causing mistakes or gaps due to lack of reception.

Conversation between two people in a noisy environment or on the street

In this mode it depends on where we are and on the ambient noise itself, on the proximity and position of the mobile to be able to capture the words well and that the user can read the text that is being transcribed on the screen well. It works fine but limited by background noise.

It is interesting and he recommends us to bring an external microphone or a headset with a microphone, he connects it and is used by the person who, when speaking, the microphone picks up the audio of the words very well and the transcription improves considerably.

External microphone connection

Conversation between more than two people inside a house

With the phone's microphone, it often falls short because of its limitation. For example, at a table with 4 people, the lack of capture of the words of the most distant interlocutor can be seen. The use of an external microphone is recommended to ensure better sound pickup. And it must be emphasized that they try to speak in an orderly manner and avoid speaking at the same time, even if it is sometimes difficult. In case they speak at the same time, we only have to ask them to repeat what was said one by one and the app will re-transcribe what was commented.

Mini microphone

Conversation at family or business meetings

The tests she took at family gatherings this past Christmas have helped her a lot to keep up with the conversations they had. In these cases, he uses an external microphone, places it approximately in the center of the meeting and except for very specific things, the transcription was fantastic. It also recommends that participants speak one by one to facilitate not only the greater capture of the conversation but also the correct reading by the user of it.

High-quality external microphone for meetings

Conclusion

Google instant transcription is a very useful application for people who have hearing problems. It contributes to communication efficiently, although sometimes limited, and can be considerably improved through the use of microphones external to the mobile.

Very easy to install and configure, as well as the direct access from the main screen by simply pressing the accessibility icon is a very remarkable point.

It reminds us that you need an internet connection to be able to make instant transcriptions, either via mobile data or Wi-Fi. If there is no connection, only non-verbal sounds will be indicated, that is, knocking on the door, dog barking, finger snapping, etc. Of course, the better the internet connection, the better and smoother it will work.

In certain scenarios, the transcription is really good as long as you speak well and the microphone of the mobile phone captures the sound correctly.

In a noisy environment or with several people, it is strongly recommended to use an external microphone that will allow you to capture sounds better than the telephone microphone, as a reporter or centering it when there are several people gathered.

A very favorable point is that it is a free application that is constantly updated and making improvements. The counterpart is that for now it is only compatible with the Android system, it does not have a version for IOS.

For him it has become a really useful and indispensable app, undoubtedly improves communication between deaf or hard of hearing people. And without ads or advertising in it.

Highlights

  • Ease of use, installation and configuration.
  • Quick access to the application from the accessibility icon.
  • As soon as you open the application, it begins to listen and transcribe.
  • Possibility to choose between 70 different languages.
  • Possibility of using primary and secondary language.
  • Possibility of connecting an external microphone to improve the quality of sound reception.
  • You can answer in writing using the mobile keyboard.
  • Transcripts can be kept for up to 3 days.
  • Able to recognize different non-verbal sounds, labeling them on screen.

 Improvement points

  • Possibility of development for IOS.
  • Speech recognition in Spanish has errors from time to time. Although it is improving with each update.
  • With the possibility of saving conversations for up to 3 days, it would be nice to be able to access it through the keyboard to make corrections or annotations.
  • Possibility of using more than one microphone to capture the sound correctly, for example in family or business meetings.
  • The possibility of using the microphones of intelligent systems, such as Google Home or Amazon's Echo, would be interesting, so that well distributed in a room it can capture the words well enough so that the person using the application does not lose the conversation.
  • It would be of great help if, apart from the instant transcription that you carry out, you could translate into the selected language, thus facilitating communication with people of different nationalities or when traveling abroad.
